Silk pillowcase - 100% mulberry silk - The Silk Collection

We've all heard the hype about silk pillowcases and the wide range of benefits that they can provide for your skin, hair and the quality of your sleep (if you're still not convinced here are 10 reasons why you should make the switch!).

However, not all silk pillowcases are made the same. We personally experienced this problem when we first started using silk pillowcases many years ago. With so many different types of silk pillowcases available in the market, we found it difficult to the find the highest quality silk pillowcases at affordable prices.

This lead to the creation of The Silk Collection, as we are passionate about using the best quality silk fabric and providing this at a price that is accessible to our customers.

If you are thinking about investing in a silk pillowcase, here are a few key things to consider before making your purchase.

1. Is it 100% mulberry silk?

Mulberry silk is widely accepted to be the best quality silk in the world. It is therefore important to ensure that the silk pillowcase you buy is 100% mulberry silk so that you can experience the true benefits of sleeping on silk.

Using a 100% mulberry silk pillowcase is beneficial for many reasons, especially because it is a 100% natural fibre, a breathable fabric, and naturally hypoallergenic, which means it is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.

Double check that the silk pillowcase you buy is made from 100% pure mulberry silk rather than a different type of silk or a 'silk blend' which incorporates other synthetic fabrics into the pillowcase as this will not provide the same level of benefits as a pure silk pillowcase.

2. Check the momme count

Momme is the international measurement for the weight of silk. The higher the momme count, the denser the silk and the higher the overall quality. Whilst many silk pillowcases in the market will have a lower momme count of 19 momme or below, we use 22 momme which means our silk has a luxury weight to it.

It is really important to check the momme count before making your purchase - if a momme weight is not displayed, this suggests that the quality will not be the same as those with higher momme counts. This is often the reason why some 'silk pillowcases' are cheaper in price, however the result is a lower quality product.

3. Check the grade of the silk

Whilst cotton is measured using thread count, silk quality is measured by grades. The higher the grade, the higher the quality of the silk and the more expensive the product will be.

Silk is graded from A-C (A being the highest grade) and from 1-6 (6 is the highest quality). This means that grade 6A is the best quality silk available in the world and typically has a higher price point due to the higher quality material.

This is something you should look out for to ensure that you are purchasing a high quality silk pillowcase.

4. Check if it is OEKO-TEK certified

It is really important to check that the silk pillowcase has been tested by an independent source to ensure that it is free from harmful chemicals and toxins.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is a global standard to certify that products are free from harmful chemicals and toxins and this certification must be renewed on an annual basis.

Having an OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified silk pillowcase is not only beneficial for your skin, but is also environmentally-conscious as it ensures that only eco-friendly dyes are used in production processes and ensures that harmful chemicals are not being used and released into the environment.

Please note that all of our silk products are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified.

5. How easy is it to wash your silk pillowcase?

Silk is a delicate fabric, so for best results we recommend hand-washing silk. However, for convenience, it is often much easier to machine-wash and only the highest quality silk pillowcases will be able to be machine-washed.

It is best to check the washing instructions before you make your purchase to see how you can wash the silk pillowcase (don't worry - ours are machine-washable!)

6. Presentation - is it a gift?

If you are buying a silk pillowcase as a special gift for a loved one, double-check that the packaging is exactly what you are looking for.

Each of our silk pillowcases are hand-packaged into a luxury gift box at no extra charge. This gift box has an elegant, timeless design and it has been designed to be re-used; you can keep it on your dressing table to store jewellery, make up, or other silk items!

If you are ordering a gift, we can also add a written personalised note to make your gift extra special.
